Beat Street Cafe

This alternative little cafe is located on a street corner on the city fringe, and from the outside it looks quite quaint. Once you enter the cosy entrance way, however, it’s surprising just how many tables there are. I do love a good alfresco area in a cafe, especially on a sunny day, and Beat Street delivers. When we visited it was unusually warm day for May, but I can imagine that it would still be quite cosy even on a colder day.

Their relaxed, casual, friendly service makes you feel like you’ve popped in to a friends place a for a coffee. I’ve visited Beat Street a few times recently and not only is their service consistent, but so is their coffee. It’s smooth but has a bit of a kick and I do, at times, like my coffee to taste like you can actually feel like the caffeine instantly hitting your veins.

We popped in on a Sunday afternoon and there was live acoustic music to listen to whilst we chatted and enjoyed our coffee. New Zealand has such a big drinking culture (not a judgement, just an observation) and I’m all for encouraging non-alcoholic catchups with friends so it’s great to find a cafe that promotes a similar vibe as sitting in a garden bar.

Their food menu is impressive, and breakfast is available from 7am to 2pm. I’m personally pretty happy with the 7am start, especially on the weekends! But for those of you who like to wait until the afternoon for your cafe fix, they have some tasty cabinet food available all day as well. They also boast a good range of vegetarian and vegan options, if you fancy.
The decor is very artsy and unique, and the furniture is all mismatched which suits the vibe perfectly. It isn’t usually my style, but I do like what they’ve done with the place. My only gripe was that the cups for water weren’t very clean (probably clean but wiped with a not-so clean teatowel) but that aside, we enjoyed our afternoon here.
