Looking for somewhere toasty and warm this winter? Then THIS is your place. The temperature may require you to de-layer substantially, but you’ll definitely feel right at home with the sweet atmosphere at Gentle Giant.
On Sunday morning we decided to take a cruise out towards Sumner to catch up with friends and we just happened to spot this bad boy as we drove through Ferrymead and we couldn’t pull in fast enough. The exterior aesthetic was clean wooden panelling, with big glass windows and a stone feature wall which upon arrival we discovered was a neat outdoor fireplace to keep the courtyard nice and cosy. New and modern interior makes this cafe/bar easy on the eye, and I would have happily had any of the decor in my own home. It’s attached to a gorgeous homewares store, Casual and Country, where I want to buy all. the. things.
An impromptu drive over to Lyttelton to find awesome coffee led us to the Lyttelton Coffee Co. And boy-oh-boy did we find awesome coffee?! The day has finally arrived – I was so impressed by the incredibly delicious coffee that it officially gets my first 5 outta 5 coffee bean rating on the blog!
When I walked in to XCHC my heart did a little flutter when I discovered it wasn’t just another cafe, it was a creative space too! Exchange Christchurch is a neat co-op space featuring a showcase space, makerspace and rad cafe. I live quite near to here and have driven past it many a time, but this is another Christchurch cafe that only opens during the week (seriously, how can so many great cafes not be open weekends?). This industrial feel, warehouse cafe has a relaxed vibe and awesome coffee and food to boot.
Sadly, there had to be a first disappointing review and Meshino in Wigram has topped my list of terrible coffee’s recently. I just wanted to be clear that it was the Wigram cafe, as I have not yet visited the St Albans cafe and don’t want to tar it with the same brush. Now, I am an avid Allpress cheerleader so was quite excited to learn this little cafe around the corner from where I’ve been working from the last few weeks had Allpress beans. In the years I’ve been drinking Allpress, I have never had a bad one. Until now.
A friend of mine recommended I try this place out, as it is one of the coffee places he hits up whenever he is visiting from Auckland (cheers Bob!) and I’ve been frequenting this joint a lot over the last couple of weeks. My first ever coffee there was off-the-hook and I’ve been a huge fan ever since. If you want delicious, smooth but still strong coffee, every time… this is a winner! The staff are always friendly and the service is pretty quick – even when they are busy.
Oh Blenheim, you sure know how to impress a girl! A few weeks back I road shotgun on a road trip to Blenheim. It was my first proper time visiting, as the last time was dark and rainy so we literally couldn’t see anything. This visit however was totally on point. It was crisp and cold, the sun was shining like no tomorrow, and the vibe was chilled and calming. I spent my days testing out a few of the coffee shops (which I will also review) but I have to say, this one was an unusual stand out for me.
I have to admit, I’ve walked past this cafe a couple of times in my visits to The Colombo and it didn’t scream “I make great coffee, come inside!”. But as I’m on a mission to test out all the cafe’s in Christchurch I decided to suck it up and give this one a shot today. I actually didn’t realise before I went in but they serve Hummingbird Coffee and in my recent experience it’s a pretty good bean. So provided their barista’s know how to make a decent coffee, then it was most likely going to be a good coffee.
This alternative little cafe is located on a street corner on the city fringe, and from the outside it looks quite quaint. Once you enter the cosy entrance way, however, it’s surprising just how many tables there are. I do love a good alfresco area in a cafe, especially on a sunny day, and Beat Street delivers. When we visited it was unusually warm day for May, but I can imagine that it would still be quite cosy even on a colder day.
Honestly, where do I start? I am literally in love with this cafe. Not only does their coffee taste absolutely amazing, it’s also a roastery and shop too so you can stock up on coffee paraphernalia for home. Heaven! Located in a warehouse building on Tuam St in the CBD, this rad cafe has it all. Awesome coffee, incredible service, tasty treats, coffee beans by the vat load and the coolest coffee accessories.
