On Sunday morning we decided to take a cruise out towards Sumner to catch up with friends and we just happened to spot this bad boy as we drove through Ferrymead and we couldn’t pull in fast enough. The exterior aesthetic was clean wooden panelling, with big glass windows and a stone feature wall which upon arrival we discovered was a neat outdoor fireplace to keep the courtyard nice and cosy. New and modern interior makes this cafe/bar easy on the eye, and I would have happily had any of the decor in my own home. It’s attached to a gorgeous homewares store, Casual and Country, where I want to buy all. the. things.

XCHC: Exchange Christchurch

XCHC

When I walked in to XCHC my heart did a little flutter when I discovered it wasn’t just another cafe, it was a creative space too! Exchange Christchurch is a neat co-op space featuring a showcase space, makerspace and rad cafe. I live quite near to here and have driven past it many a time, but this is another Christchurch cafe that only opens during the week (seriously, how can so many great cafes not be open weekends?). This industrial feel, warehouse cafe has a relaxed vibe and awesome coffee and food to boot.

Meshino Expresso – Wigram

Meshino

Sadly, there had to be a first disappointing review and Meshino in Wigram has topped my list of terrible coffee’s recently. I just wanted to be clear that it was the Wigram cafe, as I have not yet visited the St Albans cafe and don’t want to tar it with the same brush. Now, I am an avid Allpress cheerleader so was quite excited to learn this little cafe around the corner from where I’ve been working from the last few weeks had Allpress beans. In the years I’ve been drinking Allpress, I have never had a bad one. Until now.

Crafted Coffee Company

Crafted Coffee Co

A friend of mine recommended I try this place out, as it is one of the coffee places he hits up whenever he is visiting from Auckland (cheers Bob!) and I’ve been frequenting this joint a lot over the last couple of weeks. My first ever coffee there was off-the-hook and I’ve been a huge fan ever since. If you want delicious, smooth but still strong coffee, every time… this is a winner! The staff are always friendly and the service is pretty quick – even when they are busy.

23 Grove Road Coffee House

23 Grove Road

Oh Blenheim, you sure know how to impress a girl! A few weeks back I road shotgun on a road trip to Blenheim. It was my first proper time visiting, as the last time was dark and rainy so we literally couldn’t see anything. This visit however was totally on point. It was crisp and cold, the sun was shining like no tomorrow, and the vibe was chilled and calming. I spent my days testing out a few of the coffee shops (which I will also review) but I have to say, this one was an unusual stand out for me.

Cheeky Sparrow

Cheeky Sparrow 2

I have to admit, I’ve walked past this cafe a couple of times in my visits to The Colombo and it didn’t scream “I make great coffee, come inside!”. But as I’m on a mission to test out all the cafe’s in Christchurch I decided to suck it up and give this one a shot today. I actually didn’t realise before I went in but they serve Hummingbird Coffee and in my recent experience it’s a pretty good bean. So provided their barista’s know how to make a decent coffee, then it was most likely going to be a good coffee.

Kadett

Kadett7 We found out about Kadett whilst flicking through the entertainment section of the newspaper on the weekend and were pleasantly surprised to learn it was just a short 5 minute walk from our house. Located in an old mechanics workshop, this sweet little cafe does minimalist well. It’s an interesting setup; as you first enter there is a neat little shop with a small selection of clothing, and also a one woman hairdressing salon. The cafe itself is totally zen with white painted brick walls, organic tables and bookcases and some great greenery which add to the calm feel of the place. We were greeted at the counter by a lovely lady who was happy to smile for a photo (though my camera caught her too soon) and couldn’t fault the friendly service we received. My boyfriend and I both commented that we felt like we were hanging out at someone’s house – the place had such a great vibe.

Staveley Cafe & Store

StaveleyCafe3

Right, so I know that my first blog post being about a cafe not even in Christchurch isn’t ideal, but it’s just how it’s going to be, okay? Over the long weekend my boyf and I took a little road trip into the middle of the South Island to make the most of what was likely to be the last chance that we would have to go camping before the weather got too cold. As it turns out, that point had been and gone. Regardless of that, we braved the crisp conditions and had an epic weekend anyway. On Monday morning we packed up the tent and went for a mission out to see the Sharplin Falls which are located along the Mount Somers Track. The track was officially closed, and I’m not recommending that anyone go against their advice and go on it anyway, but we did and it was totally worth it. The spot where the falls are is pretty gorg, and I can imagine on a nice hot day it would be a great spot for a wee dip.
