When I walked in to XCHC my heart did a little flutter when I discovered it wasn’t just another cafe, it was a creative space too! Exchange Christchurch is a neat co-op space featuring a showcase space, makerspace and rad cafe. I live quite near to here and have driven past it many a time, but this is another Christchurch cafe that only opens during the week (seriously, how can so many great cafes not be open weekends?). This industrial feel, warehouse cafe has a relaxed vibe and awesome coffee and food to boot.
I’m all for great service and was super stoked with the lovely friendly faces here. Part of the experience of going to a cafe is feeling like your patronage is truly valued, and it definitely felt like that here. They serve the delicious Supreme coffee beans and their barista’s know their stuff. My coffee was just about the perfect temperature and was smooth and well made. It didn’t have quite the same full flavour that I’ve had with other Supreme coffees, but it was still a great coffee. I’m excited to come back and have a dine in coffee one morning.
The cafe seating area doubles as a showcase space in the evenings and on the weekends and is available for hire for creative events including exhibitions, workshops, performances and heaps more. They have a neat little calendar of events up on their website so you can keep an eye on the cool events happening in the space. Their maker space, which is straight ahead as you walk through the entrance is a place for creative entrepreneurs who are in the early stages of their business and want a professional little nook to call their own whilst they develop their biz. The residents, as they are referred, are updated as people come and go so you can check out which clever peeps are calling XCHC home here.
I was also very impressed with the selection of organic, raw and healthy foods on offer. They weren’t just your typical cafe offerings but rather a selection of interesting, mouthwatering treats. Their croissant looked slightly more cooked than I would normally pick for a croissant, but it was still the perfect pastry consistency and tasted absolutely divine. I’m very much looking forward to spending more time here…
